SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM THE JME PTA
THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IS DISCUSSING CUTS TO OUR ON CAMPUS COUNSELORS FOR STUDENTS. WE ARE STRONGLY AGAINST THIS ACTION AS IT WILL HAVE A DIRECT, NEGATIVE IMPACT ON OUR STUDENTS WELL BEING. BELOW IS MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW COUNSELORS HELP BUILD AN ENVIRONMENT TO SUPPORT OUR CHILDREN EMOTIONALLY AND SOCIALLY. TO ENSURE THIS DOES NOT HAPPEN, WE ASK THAT YOU SHOW UP AT THE NEXT BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETING THIS MONDAY, JANUARY 12TH AT 6:30PM. LINK BELOW
MTSS Counselors are licensed or license-eligible mental health providers trained to understand school culture, systems, and school-based mental health needs. They play a vital role in supporting student mental health, developing social-emotional skills, and removing barriers to learning, all of which are closely connected to academic success, attendance, and behavior.
MTSS Counselors are often among the first to be called upon during a crisis and are always prepared to support students, families, and staff. Their role is both preventive and responsive, offering early intervention, crisis management, and ongoing mental health support within the school environment.
It is important to note that if MTSS Counselors are unavailable, these critical needs do not disappear; they shift to someone else. Risk assessments, crisis support, and ongoing mental health care require specialized training and a consistent presence. Without MTSS Counselors, students risk being overlooked and lost, and the school loses a vital layer of support that cannot simply be replaced by other staff.
MTSS Counselors are not just a peripheral service or an “extra.” MTSS counselors are integrated into the school's daily life and are crucial to maintaining a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. Supporting MTSS counseling services is an investment in student well-being, school stability, and long-term student success.
